Gingko Petrified Forest State Park

As we were crossing to Vantage, WA, we came across this small State Park with little walking trails which highlight petrified trees found during road construction. Maple, Walnut, Elm and Douglas Fir were seen! Somehow we managed to miss part of the trail and thus no Gingko were spotted.

Columbia River, from Vantage, WA

Kris' first view of the Columbia River! Note, there's a town in the state of Washington named "George". Someone had a silly sense of humour.

July 4th

Drove west then south from Castlegar, and crossed the border south of Christina Lake. Poor US Customs guy had to work the Fourth of July! Drove south on a nice winding highway towards Spokane through a progressively drier landscape as the mountain forests gave way to arid scrub. Lots of bluish sage bushes and other desert-y plantlife. As the landscape became flatter the winds began to pick up until we were getting blown back and forth across the road. We then headed east to Ellensburg, a nice town nestled into the first green valley we had seen in a while.

Met Tina and Jerry for a fabulous BBQ meal with the first fresh corn we’ve had this year, followed by a view of the July 4 fireworks from a nearby roof. Actually, we’d climbed through the theatre building at Central Washington University (where Tina is and Jerry will be profs). It was neat to see the inner workings of a theatre (circa 1930, recently renovated to add lighting catwalks and brighter lights), crawling up above the seats and stage area, then up another ladder to the roof.

Relaxation

What a gorgeous day! I got to sleep in, pick strawberries from the garden, had a nap, got BBQ food.... Toby helped out by trimming the wisteria (his long arms and legs came in handy!). He worked hard yesterday too, cleaning the car. All I did was learn how to crochet! Sam's settling in well enough to explore the porch and carport today. Maybe he'll be so comfy here that we shouldn't move him to New York!

Tomorrow morning we head southward, crossing the border into Washington State, and heading down to Ellensburg to see Toby's Grinnell juggling partner, Tina. Should sign off and finish packing stuff up.
